A pan is the floor of the shower, so replacing it means opening the wet area. We build both. A mortar-bed pan is packed to a measured slope on site and then waterproofed. A prefab pan is a pre-sloped base that goes in on a prepared subfloor. Which one fits depends on the drain location, the shower size and the floor underneath, and we decide that when we see the bathroom.
Whichever pan goes in, it is covered with Schluter-Kerdi sheet membrane with sealed seams and built with a verified slope to the drain, and the pan is flood-tested before tile goes over it. We are Kerdi-Schluter Certified, and all waterproofing includes a non-transferable lifetime warranty.
If the old pan has been leaking, the damage is usually not just the pan. One crew handles the demo, any framing or plumbing fixes, the new pan, tile and finish, with no subcontractor chain to coordinate.
